National Archives of Finland, Finland
The duties of the National Archive Service are to ensure the preservation and availability of records belonging to the national cultural heritage. The responsibility for these tasks applies particularly to records produced by the public authorities, state and local government alike. The duties of the National Archive Service are regulated by the Archives Act (831/1994), with more detailed specification provided in the Decree on the National Archive Service (832/1994).
To ensure the proper preservation of valuable documents of the public administration, the National Archive Service directs the records management and archival operations of the authorities, generally developing the archive services and required research and training, and determines which documents of the state and local government must be permanently preserved. For the discharge of these tasks, the National Archive Service has a statutory mandate to issue binding orders to the authorities regarding the permanent preservation of documents, archive facilities, the properties of stationery and writing materials to be used in document preparation, and the registration and inventorying of documents.
The National Archive Service receives and preserves official documents appraised for permanent preservation. It also procures and preserves private archives of social or scientific importance. The National Archive Service ensures the usability of its records by making them available in Research Rooms in the National Archives and Provincial Archives. It also provides network services that support the use of its archives.
